LIBR 204 – Information Organization and Management

Unit 10 Assignment_Thomson_Outreach Plan

Goal: To reach and provide better Library Services to Senior Citizens in the City of Santa Monica: focusing on senior citizens who are not current library users, with purpose, and measurable outcomes.

Objective #1: The SMPL Branch Manager will convene a focus group consisting of senior citizens and at least one representative from six service providers (SM Commission of the Senior Community, WISE & Healthy Aging Dial-a-Ride Transportation Program, Emeritus College, SM Senior Recreation Center, Senior Housing Administrator, and YMCA Seniors Program Dept.) within six months by June 2011.

Objective #2: Based on the results of the focus group in O-#1, a survey of informational needs that the library might address will be designed by a professional consultant and distributed to at least 150 senior citizens by August 2011. Each survey will contain an incentive to return the survey: $10 gift certificate to Whole Foods Market.

Objective #3: A “Welcome” event will be planned for senior citizens in the community, including food/beverages at the Santa Monica Main Public Library in early October 2011. Representatives from the City of Santa Monica and nonprofit agencies will be present so attending seniors will have the opportunity to ask legal, health, and other advisory questions, one-one-one, at no charge.

Objective #4: Based on a list of attendees who register for library cards, library volunteers from the Friends of SM Library will contact 150 senior citizens six and twelve months later (April and October 2012) to administer a brief questionnaire about how particular library services made a difference in their lives. Each participating senior will receive another $10 gift certificate for groceries at Whole Foods Market.

Budget: $1,500 gift certificates donated by Whole Foods Market, plus $500 for “Welcome” Event items (food/beverages) pledged by the Friends of the Library. $2,500 for survey design/analysis by a Professional Consultant provided by Library Professional Services, and $1,500 from the Library Operating Budget. Total: $6,000.

Evaluation: The focus group will re-convene in December 2012 to review the results, with follow-up phone calls and measurable library card registrations, event attendance, volunteer recruitments. Based on the evaluation review, the services provided will be adapted accordingly.
